Was this growing up? If this was what it felt like, then what was the point? In the coming years, I would begin to suspect that the world was hiding a secret from me. The exciting world that I had reached out to with open arms, invited into my heart with the sincere wonder of a child had held back its true nature: no one was happy. Teachers, students, parents, and friends- everyone had misery locked inside their hearts. When people spoke, they complained. When they got something, they wanted more. No contentment existed, and humans wandered without destination. I would never succeed; I was not good enough, smart enough, attractive enough or different enough to mean anything to the world. What began as a suspicion began to permeate my everyday life. Friends became shallow and uninteresting, classwork began to lose meaning. Sports became chores and sleep fled, or came only after a panic attack receded and left me gasping for air and covered in used tissues. Eleventh grade began and I was scared for my future, and for my life. Even though my once-expansive group of friends had dwindled into a precious few, with easily the most priceless being my boyfriend of three years, I was still shocked to hear the psychiatrist say, â€Å"You seem to have extraordinarily low self-esteem!† Mental illness is a tricky subject. Families hide it, the media abuses it, and unless you have experienced it, it defies understanding. No one gets through life without having a cold or a fever, but not everyone will go through the trauma of depression. Junior year of high school is commonly accepted as the most difficult year of grade school. The stress piled on by high level academics, varsity sports, clubs, jobs and the upcoming college search is a struggle for just about every teen. Personally, my junior year was not just a struggle, but a tooth and nail battle. Clinical depression, anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive spectrum disorders and premenstrual dysphoric disorder are not easygoing classmates. Doctors’ appointments and softball practice collide. Anxiety stomachaches make for a miserable cross country practice. These private battles are difficult to hide, but even harder to explain. These struggles are not all in the past for me. Every day I continue to wage a war for my happiness and sanity- no exaggeration is necessary. The difference between today and a year ago is still astounding. I am able to be proud of who I am and how far I have come. Being able to relax enough to smile and say, â€Å"I am enough and I have done enough† is a prize more rewarding than any I have earned so far in life. I have big plans, and I intend to see them through with ambition, confidence and pride.

Risk for depression and suicide in servicemen Depressive Disorder:Â  The Struggle of Our Nation’s Sons Abstract This paper discusses the causes and risk of depressive disorder developing amongst Full-Time National Servicemen and the possible risk of suicide ideation. The predicted outcome was that the cause of depressive disorder developing amongst Full-Time National Servicemen is associated with the influence their upbringing have in relation to how they cope with hardship. Survey result have proved that minor symptoms of depression is developing amongst most of the Full-Time National Servicemen but do not show signs of suicide ideation. In the discussion segment, several psychological theories will explain and validate the reasons to why Full-Time National Servicemen who are facing hardship have developed minor to even severe symptoms of depressive disorder. In conclusion, the causes are associated with the upbringing of an individual and the lack of fulfilment in various needs. Depressive Disorder: The struggle of our nation’s sons Singapore, minuscular yet strong and striving country that has gained recognition amongst the colossal shadow of nations with history dating far beyond what our young nation has. How did a nation so young acquire such stability in less than a century? The answer, ‘Military Force’ and no, it does not just refer to military prowess but also the transition of boys to men. Singaporeans are familiar with the term ‘National Service’, to serve as a Full Time National Servicemen (NSFs) in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Police Force (SPF) or the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) for two year service period at the age of eighteen. It is a fearful yet enlightening process for the young sons of the nation, being given the responsibility to serve and protect the nation is no easy feat. As such, they are provided vigorous training that puts their mind and body to the test, pushing them to their limits to promote growth in both physical and mental capabilit y. For most, the process of going through National Service are filled with obstacles surpassing anything they have experienced, having to cope with their physical training, their mental aptitude being tested while juggling responsibilities of their individual roles amongst their friends, family and loved ones. Depressive Disorder has been a serious health problem all around the world; this does not exclude Singapore, as one in 17 people in Singapore having suffered with Major Depressive Disorder at least once in their lifetime. In the recent years, there has been several suicide cases involving Full-Time National Servicemen and with depressive disorder and suicide rates on the rise, extra attention should also be given to our nation’s sons who are going through hardships in order to keep the nation safe. Depressive Disorder In the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (APA, 2013), Depressive Disorder is as described: Depression comes in various forms but one common feature is that they share similar features such as presence of sadness, emptiness, irritable mood while having significant cognitive changes that affects a person’s ability to function. The only difference is the duration, timing, and the cause of it. (pp. 155). During the fifty fourth World Health Assembly held by the World Health Organization and the ministers of health, it is stated in the report that depression is in the fourth position amongst the ten leading causes of global burden of disease and is expected to rise to the second place by the year 2020, World Health Organisation (WHO, 2001). This report reflects how common depression is and the seriousness of this mental disorder is not something to be taken lightly, considering that most of the people who commit suicide are also clinically depressed, (WHO, 2001). A study conducted by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) shows that Major Depressive Disorder emerged as one of the top three mental illnesses along with Alcohol abuse and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, with one in 17 people in Singapore have suffered from Major Depressive Disorder at some point in their lifetime and majority of it occurred by the age of 29 while most of those who were affected weren’t seeking help, (IMH, 2013). Suicide In a recent statistical report retrieved from the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) for National suicide rate reflected that in the year 2012, the total suicide rate was at the all-time high rate since 1992, hitting the total of 467 and 298 of them were males, (SOS, 2013). Having more than half of the fatality being males also reflects how vulnerable Full-Time National Servicemen are to suicide ideation and the steadily increasing suicidal rate in Singapore as well as on the global scale. During a Parliament Question and Answer segment in the year 2013, it is reported that a based on a local research study from the year 2000 to 2004 showed that a third of the total suicide population because of relationship problems and another third was associated with financial or employment concerns, (Ministry of Health (MOH) Singapore, 2013) Gender According to research study, based on gender, females are more likely to develop depression as compared to males, in the ratio of two females to one male; the male population has a higher percentile of completing suicide as compared to females. (Kua EH, Mahendran R, Fung D, 2002), Risk Factors Several of the risk factors for depression could be triggered by challenging life events such as relationship issues, financial difficulties, physical illnesses, unemployment, lack of support and loss of loved one, all which can be associated with Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow’s theory revolves around human motivation and the Hierarchy of Needs is made up of a pyramid that is divided into several segments such as Physiological, Safety, Love/Belonging, Esteem and Self-Actualization needs, (Maslow, 1943). With the lack of fulfilment or rather, a lack of motivation, one could result in a state of depression. Due to the limited case study, literature review and research study of depressive disorder amongst Full-Time National Servicemen in Singapore, the purpose of the research study is to create awareness to the general public about depressive disorder amongst Full-Time National Servicemen as well as identifying the causes amongst the servicemen population. This would then hope to result in a reduced number of suicidal cases amongst our Nation’s sons. I predicted that this research study will be able to validate my assumption that the causes of depression amongst Full-Time National Servicemen is due to the environment they grew up in and their inability to cope with various roles and issues while going through the tough changes in environment during National Service. Full-Time National Servicemen are also not receiving enough attention in regards to mental health care even though they are significantly more vulnerable to developing depressive disorder whilst going through National Service which also relates to the increased risk of possible suicidal cases in the future. Methods Participants There are a total of 16 participants, all whom are male and were either still in their Full-Time National Service period or have recently completed their national service. Design An online survey was conducted using SurveyFace, an online survey tool. The survey is structured in a way that majority of the questions being closed ended, whereas the open ended questions are meant for participants to provide qualitative information in relevance to the question. The link was then shared through online social networking , Facebook. The topic of the survey was omitted to prevent participants from being hesitant towards a potentially sensitive subject such as depression. Procedure Participants consist of netizens, who had met the criteria stated on the survey link volunteered to participate in the survey by clicking the link posted on social networking site, Facebook. There are a total of 14 questions and responses are available as either individual forms or overall summary of responses. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes depending on individuals. Not all answers were required to answer and open ended answers vary in length depending on the participant. Results According to the results, slightly more than half of the participants had their expectation met about how National Service is going to be and majority of the total respondents found that their experience as a Full-Time National Servicemen is positive and beneficial. Results also indicates that more than half of the respondents associate the toughness of National Service with how they were brought while almost half of the respondents found it easier to cope with issues during National Service as compared to life as a civilian. More than two handfuls of respondents had negative past experiences that would manifest itself during times of hardship yet only a handful of the respondent’s issue were recurrent. Based on the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, respondents attributed that the lack Self-Actualization is the leading cause of issues during National Service whereas Love and belonging needs and Esteem needs are tied at second. Based on the results, Majority of the respondents had also indicated to have at least one of the mild symptoms of depression and of the ten, eight also showed moderate symptoms of depression while five of them also have severe symptoms of depression. Results also reflected that majority of the respondents felt that the Singapore Armed Forces should provide more attention to Full-Time National Servicemen’s mental health. Half of the total respondents were provided by the SAF with means to cope with emotional distress while the other half did not. Less than a third of the respondents received mental health state evaluation from their superiors while almost all of the respondents felt that it is recommended that superiors conduct a mental assessment of Full-Time National Servicemen on a daily basis. Discussion According to Freud’s psychoanalytic theory in regards to the causes behind ‘melancholia’ or presently known as clinical depression, is the result of a surplus of pleasure in the society and the state of civilization itself (Freud, 1929). When a state of pleasure is prolonged, it would only produce a feeling of mild contentment, in other words with Singapore being one of the safest country, providing quality living for most, individuals have the tendency to be complacent about how privileged they are. They who grew up having what they want most of their life and not having gone through hardships during their early childhood developmental stage will have a hard time in the future, especially during National Service when one has to leave their comfort zone, experiencing hardships surpassing what most have gone through. For most part of the hypothesis was supported that majority of the Full-Time National Servicemen found that their upbringing contributed to how they perceive National Service and the intensity of the toughness that they experience as well as finding it harder to cope with issues while doing their National Service as compared to as when they were civilians. This could be explained through Bowlby’s Attachment theory which states that one’s early childhood experience has a significant amount of influence on the behaviour and development in the future (Bowlby, 1988) Most of the male population in Singapore have heard of stories about National Service, comparing how tough National Service used to be for the older generation and how blessed the younger generations are because of the vast improvement to the system and facilities. The younger generation are indeed having it easy now, even having the opportunity to bring along smart phones into their respective camps. Superiors are also more humane as compared to the olden days where punishment seemed to have no limits, from kissing the tree to having an endless march into the late night, pushing individuals to their physical and mental limit. Through all the hardships, there will be moments when individuals are put into a depressive state, feeling empty, sad, having irritable mood, accompanied by changes in the thinking process that could influence one’s ability to function. These are all common experience which everyone goes through at some point of their life but most do not know that these are also few of the various symptoms of depressive disorder which are stated in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, (APA, 2013). Because of this reason, people often overlook the severity of early identification of individuals who may be well on the way at developing a full fledge clinical depression. Freud’s concept of overexposure, based on the pleasure principle, can offer one explanation for the prevalence of depression in developed countries. According to this theory, pleasure is, on one hand, omnipresent, and on the other, unattainable, as we have become almost deadened to the experience Problems of daily life does not simply vanish during times of hardship, instead, to those going through National Service, it may seem to blow out of proportion. Not having time to rectify the issues of their life outside of National Service due to the intense trainings, and the freedom of going home daily is something only a few are privileged with. Many NSF are burdened with the responsibility of their various role as an individual, be it as a son, brother, friend, boyfriend or even spouse to others while going through their National Service. With depression on the rise, the increased suicide rate would increase as well. Though there aren’t many recorded cases of suicide amongst National Servicemen, it does not mean that the intentions aren’t there. When an individual has suicidal thought, it only requires a moment of impulse to attempt suicide and in the worst case scenario, it may lead to death. Providing necessary care to individuals who are showing early symptoms o f depression is important as to prevent it from escalating into a more serious condition. Full-Time National Servicemen has also acknowledged that they are not receiving enough mental health concern as compared to physical health due to the lack of systems that look into individuals who may be emotional distress. This could be because as a member of the military force, they would expect soldiers to be able to have the physical capacity that allows them to perform task needed for survival during times of war but due to the intensity of the training, many may have failed to cope with the stress that comes along with it hence resulting in a state of emotional vulnerability. Only a few have stated that buddy systems are introduced during Basic Military Training (BMT) which offers individuals at least a partner to confide in when facing emotional distress but as soon as they get posted into their units, there seem to be a complete lack of system that could offer Full-Time National Servicemen the means to cope with emotional distress such as counselling service, suicide hotline and even the buddy system isn’t implemented. With the lack of such system, Full-Time National Servicemen have a higher risk of having their depressive symptoms overlook and may develop depressive disorder and in the worst case scenario, result in suicidal attempts. Conclusion In conclusion, the overall results has supported my prediction that an individual’s upbringing has significant impact on how they would perceive experiences in the future and their ability to cope with issues were negatively affected during their national service as compared their life as civilians. However, contrary to what I have predicted, results have shown the lack of support in regards to Full-Time National Servicemen having any form of suicide intention or ideation. This may have been because regardless of how tough National Service is to most, they would still regard it as a positive experience and a necessary phase in their life. Depression may still be on the rise and results have also reflected on how common depression is amongst the Full-Time National Servicemen, they do not show sign of suicide ideation which shows that it is still not too late to provide preventive measures in assuring that Full-Time National Servicemen are receiving sufficient attention to their mental health. By implementing a system that seeks to assure that Full-Time National Servicemen are receiving ample attention in regards to their mental health, it could greatly reduce the risk of depressive disorder from developing and would result in the vast improvement in the overall performance by the servicemen protecting our nation. Limitations The research has several limitations. Due to having past experience as a Full-Time National Servicemen, several questions may have contained biasedness and prediction was made with the aid of my past experience. The research study did not include participant’s ethnic group and religion hence losing out precious viewpoints in that aspect as Singapore is a multiracial country. Future Research A personal interview would have provided greater depth in information and may have contributed crucial information which the survey question could not gather. There are many concerns that should be taken more seriously than others and should be brought to the Senates attention. Most people are concerned about the unfair and convoluted income tax laws in our country that can be easily eliminated with the application of a flat tax on income. With the tax rate that is in effect right now, there are so many flaws and loop holes that the system is easily manipulated. The rich do not pay their fair share of taxes, because they have found ways to avoid them. The middle class looks for ways around paying taxes through things like tax breaks. And the poor ends up paying fewer taxes then what they wind up getting back in the end, giving them no incentive to make a lot of money. If a person works hard and gets a raise that will put him in a higher tax bracket, he could actually be making less money with the raise. Also, the government constantly looks for new ways to tax in order to pay for education, military, health care, and more. To consider what's right and what's wrong, compare sales tax and income tax. Say the sales tax in your state is 10%. Your "taxable amount" is the total of all that you purchase. You go to the store and by something for $20, you will pay 10%, or $2 tax. Say you buy 2 of the same thing, $40 total; you pay $4 in tax. Then you buy a candy bar for a $1, and use a dime to pay the tax. Nobody likes the 10% sales tax, but nobody complains they all paid their fair share. This is how flat tax works, everyone pays the same rate. If sales tax were like income tax, first, ... ... Advantage and Disadvantages of Japanese Nationals Working in the Philippines Essay

â€Å"Teaching is learning. Teaching is enriching. Teaching is challenging, it’s trying in unimaginable ways. Teaching is motivating, it’s inspiring. Teaching is frustrating, it’s frightening. Teaching is growing. Teaching is loving. Teaching is a blessing. And being a teacher means that I have a lot to learn.† (anjaligill, 2011) A quote I have read on one article on the internet that actually touched my heart. I am not a teacher but appreciate the hardships of teachers throughout their journey to imparting to us student all they can for us to have a better future. Yes we have a lot of teachers here in our country but learning is not limited to only our country. Because of media and many other sources or information we have been exposed to other cultures and languages from many different countries. Thus which lead to us wanting to learn other culture and languages. Some of these languages are Korean, Japanese, Spanish, and French. And who else are more capable in teaching us these languages than the natives of theses languages themselves. That is why this study aims to shed a light on the existence of Japanese Language teachers that are working in the country. The first part of this paper is going to touch upon the rules that’s the immigration imposes on these aliens that wish to enter the country. What kind of permits and visas that must be secured in order to be able to work. Also it talks about the role of the Department Of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in allowing these aliens to have a fair and legal job here. The second part of my report talks about the different issues that these aliens have encountered over their years of working in the Philippines. For years now we have been hearing about the melodramatic life of an OFW, we’ve had a lot of articles on the different experience they have out there. But have we ever given a thought about these foreigners that come to our country not as tourist, but to look for jobs? Probably as teachers? What more these Japanese nationals working in Davao as Japanese language teachers? We’ve been so focused on Filipinos that we forget to check on these other people who are also making a living here in our country. This paper will try to shed a light on what are the most common difficulties and what are the measures they took in order to be able to overcome these obstacles. And I am hoping to gather these datas through interviewing some Japanese nationals residing in the country specially Davao. A. What are the necessary visa and permits these Japanese nationals must secure in order to be able to work in the country? B. Are they given enough compensation and benefits in their jobs? C. Why of all other country would they choose Philippines? D. What are the different experiences they have here? For the last part this paper will try to compile the gathered data and express what are the common advantages and disadvantages of experienced by these Japanese Language teachers working in the Philippines? Those are just some of a few things this study aims to shed a light on, and to give the readers a deeper understanding on their situation through their experiences. Review of Related Literature 1. Japanese Language as a Profession When we hear the word Japanese Language most of us would think: oh that’s all about kanji!† â€Å"That is a very hard language to learn†. Yes it is true, it is not an easy language to learn but it is also one of the most interesting of all. With all the variations in the conjugation of every word, to all the particles for every sentence, but most especially to the different strokes in their unique 3 writing styles namely hiragana katakana and kanji. In the beginning yeah it will be hard but in the long run you will be able to appreciate all the hardships you have gone through in order to reach that level. So because of that many people have engaged in learning the language. Some would say that if you really want to learn something you have to do it yourself. But then again because of the complexity of this language it has become hard for others. That is why we have come to the conclusion that who else is more capable to teach us the complicated and very meticulous language than these Japanese nationals themselves? But then again this poses a very big hindrance when it comes to language barriers. It is because before Japan has been a very secluded country that doesn’t want to open up to other country. That’s is why even though some Japanese wanted to teach Japanese it would be hard for them since that not all Japanese know English and since English is the universal language communication and explanation would be hard. But as years pass by and as Japan slowly open their doors to other countries, international colleges started to rise and because of this the Japanese nationals studying in such colleges are being exposed to the word and thus they became aware of the eagerness of other people to learn their language which triggered a domino effect to theses Japanese to teach them. 2. Philippine and Japan relation in terms of work Over the years the Philippines was known by the world as major exporter of skilled workers. They even have this saying that there is no country in the world that does not have Filipinos in it. From that this study aims to focus on the Japanese citizens working in the country. For decades there has been a noticeable relationship between Japan and the Philippines. May it be in terms of trading of goods, and even official development assistance funds also known as the (ODA). The relationship of these two countries not only varies in goods and monetary sector but even in human resources. The Philippines is reputed to be the leading exporter of labor in the world, ranging from the semi-skilled to professional and technical workers (CORTEZ, 2009). This greatly impacted on the yearly remittances that the OFW’s give to the country. At the same time Japanese engineers, managers, experts and other skilled workers have entered the Philippines to accompany, implement and manage the huge direct investments and overseas development assistance programs of Japan (Tereso S. Tullao, Jr. and Michael Angelo A. Cortez, 2004). The Japanese have remained the largest group of foreign workers in the country over the years (OECD 2001). This then greatly impacted the country in terms of tourism. 3. Naturals working overseas Due to the growing economic crisis in the world most people opt to work in other country to look for â€Å"greener pastures†. Approximately eight million Filipinos are overseas, representing almost ten percent of the nation’s population (Commission on Filipinos Overseas, 2004). And one good example to these is the growing migration rate in the Philippines. Where in most Filipinos think that because of the economic crisis in the Philippines and the Low salary that working overseas became a better option. Yes they may have big salaries and they may be able to experience other culture but at the end of the day these OFW’s would have to sacrifice being with their family for money. 4. Language Barriers In order to be able to teach students, communication is important and in communication Language is vital. This is what makes learning easy. Because through language student will be able to understand what the teacher wants to deliver. But in teaching language something these language barriers pose a very big problem. Especially for those language teachers who are native speakers of the language they are teaching and only know a little English. English, with its many varieties, is a language of international and therefore intercultural communication. (Sharifian, 2009). But then we all know that there are still some countries that are not open to accepting English as an international language and Japan is one of them. The people being raised to love their own country in other words in the ways of patriotism it became hard for them to open up an accept changes being brought by the modern world. Definition of terms 1) (AEP) Alien Employment Permit is a document issued by the Department of Labor and Employment which authorizes a foreign national to work in the Philippines. 2) Alien shall refer to the foreign nationals who intend to work in the country. Japanese Workers I. Immigration All foreign nationals can freely enter the Philippines with only a passport and other travel documents for business, leisure, and social visits. The Philippine Immigration Act of 1940 states Foreigners or â€Å"non-quota immigrants† may be admitted without considering such numerical limitations (CASTRO, August). The country has not been strict on allowing foreigners to enter, In fact Nationals from some countries are allowed to enter the Philippines without visas for a stay not exceeding twenty-one (21) days, provided they hold valid tickets for their return journey to port of origin or next port of destination (Bureau of Immigration 2007-2008), Japan being one of these countries are allowed to enter the country without visa. They must present for admission into the Philippines unexpired passports or official documents in the nature of passports issued by the governments of the countries to which they owe allegiance or other travel documents showing their origin and identity. II. Department Of Labor and Employment (DOLE) But when it comes to employment the Philippines is very strict at letting foreigners to work in the country. These aliens need to secure certain visas and permits before they can actually work here. Some of these are the a)Alien Employment Permit (AEP), b)Special Work permit, and the c)9g Prearranged Employment Visa. a) Alien Employment Permit (AEP) is a document issued by the Department of Labor and Employment which authorizes a foreign national to work in the Philippines. This permit must be petitioned by a company to allow a foreigner to work locally and is the requirement for a 9g visa as well as several other visas. The employment permit may be issued to a non-resident alien or to the applicant employer after a determination of the non-availability of a person in the Philippines who is competent, able and willing at the time of application to perform the services for which the alien is desired (Labor Code of the Philippines PD 442, Article 40). Article 41 of the Labor Code provides: â€Å"After the issuance of employment permit, the alien shall not transfer to another job or change his employer without prior approval of Secretary of Labor and Employment.† In addition the alien who is found to be working without an AEP or an expired AEP shall pay a fine of Ten Thousand Pesos (P10,000) for every year to the Regional Director (DOLE Department Order No. 75-06 (Series of 2006)) and shall be subject to deportation after service of his sentence (Ferrolino, 2009). b) Special Work Permit is given by employers to foreigners that will only work for a brief time in the Philippines usually less than 6 months that can be extended for another 6 months and they are not required to apply for a (AEP) from DOLE ( Triple i Consulting Inc., 2005). c) 9g Prearranged Employment Visa is given to any foreign national who will be employed in the Philippines and occupying a technical, executive, managerial or a highly confidential position in a company for at least one year, can apply for an employment visa under Sec. 9(g) of the Philippine Immigration Act. III. Issues/Problems 1) What are the necessary visa and permits these Japanese nationals must secure in order to be able to work in the country? As to the rules of immigration and DOLE these Japanese nationals knowing that they are considered as aliens must be able secure an AEP before they can work. But according to one of my respondents who is ms. Ariza Okumura, that she only secured a working visa which is valid for only two years, before she got to work in our school. 2) Are they given enough compensation and benefits in their jobs? When it comes to compensations and benefits we all know that Philippines really give a very low compensation rate in terms of salary. According to the National Wages and Productivity Commission minimum wage in the National Capital Region ranges from P456.00 to P419.00 depending on the type of job, while in Davao city it ranges from P301.00 to P270.00. Clearly this kind of wages will not be enough to support a family that is why these families that are working here in Davao always keep a tight budget on their money. According to Miss Ariza Okumura, a Japanese Language teacher in Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku â€Å"if I live for a long time for example ten (10) years or more? The salary is okay. But if if have plan of one year or three years? The salary is low.† Mr. Tanino also a Japanese Language Teacher in MKD said â€Å"the salary is low†. True enough even these aliens or Japanese nationals to be exact who is working here in the Philippines have also experienced the very low salary here. In another interview I conducted this time it is from Takako Okamoto, also a Japanese language teacher in MKD she said â€Å"I think it is enough, for Japanese nationals’ teacher†. From this we can see the different points of view of these Japanese in terms of the compensation given to them. But one thing is for sure, they do not want the money, it’s their love of teaching and imparting what they know to those who are willing to learn. 3) Why of all other country would they choose Philippines? Some would say that Philippines is a good place to relax because of its serene beauty and it is also close to nature because it is rich in natural resources. The country being an archipelago means it is close to beaches which attracts tourist from all over the world to come here. A few would even say they want to go to the Philippines because of Filipinos have been known to the world as hospitable kind of people. But when it comes to employment there have been also very many speculations upon the capacity of the country to cater workers because of the ongoing crisis in its economy and a whole lot more. But even so after all these negative comments and speculations some still chose to work here. One good example is Ariza Okumura, MKD teacher she said during our interview that it was here choice to work here and when I asked her why this is what she told me â€Å"before when I was student we had a school trip and I came here in Davao. Also I really want to teach Japanese in foreign country†. Almost all of the Japanese language teachers I have interviewed said the same thing. That it was in their own will to go to the Philippines. In a follow up question I had which was â€Å"did you originally come here as a teacher?† I was amazed at their answers. Takako Okamoto, a MKD teacher said â€Å"I chose Philippines as a place for volunteer work.† Tanino, who is also a MKD teacher, said he first came to the Philippines to work for a company named sharp. From their answers it was clear that teaching was not their real objective in coming here, but the longer they stayed the more they fell in love with the country and its people. â€Å"During the time I met many Filipino Filipina and then they took care of me well and then I don’t like to forget everything they did for me. After one year four months I came back to Japan and decided to help the Filipino resident in the Philippines as Japanese Language teacher.† Said Okamoto sensei. 4) What are the different experiences they have here? We can finish up all day if we talk about experiences, but these are one of the parts of the lives of the people which make us actually say that we are alive. Through these experiences we learn and from these learning we can adjust in order to make things better. When it was time to ask them this question I observed that they had a very hard time in picking which experience they wanted to share. One of them said that being with students everyday are counted as one of their memorable experience, one also said that seeing the students learning is their most unforgettable experience. But there is one story that actually touched my heart. It was from Takako Okamoto she told me â€Å"actually he’s a last year graduator. He hated any kind of teacher, he hated study Japanese especially. He was lazy to attend all the class he was lazy to pass shukudai (assignments), and then sometimes he was against to the teachers. But I have been continuing to approach to him. Siguro very Samok sa kanya *how about your shukudai ? *how many times absent you might be dropped! Like that. Whenever I see him I say something. Finally he changed, he changed totally. He had a focus on study in nihongo but it was already 4th year. But I found his changes. Before RP Japan I was telling him, I know you are good at nihongo. You try to attend speech contest in RP Japan. In his speech he was saying to me thank you, like saying because of me he was changed. But for one week he got dengue and was absent. Nobody expected he could attend the speech. But he came, and said *Sensei I’m Here.† It may not mean as much to you but as I saw her as she was telling me this story you would see the happiness in her eyes. The kind of happiness that meant showed how their job as a teacher can be very rewarding, that even the small thing could make a big difference. Conclusion I admit I started late in doing this paper. But in those limited amount of time left, I was still able to learn new things through this. First is the importance of time. Know this is not port of my paper but I was able to learn and appreciate time, and how to use it wisely and productively. Second is the importance of work, as to why people look for jobs. Another is I learned to appreciate the teachers more. This happened during the times I was able to interview a few of them. At first I was hesitant in conducting interviews because I was afraid of the teachers, but then I said to myself â€Å"what’s there to lose?† So when I started the interviews I realized that I should not be afraid of these teachers because their only goal it to teach is to become a better person. That they are doing what they do not to make us suffer but to make us learn, I was able to see that â€Å"the students are the only ones who are making themselves suffer†. I also came to a conclusion that in all we do there’s a good and bad side to it. Isaac Newton’s third law of motion said that â€Å"For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction†. In life that is also proven true, with everything we do, even in may it be as a person, as an employee, etc. there will always be an advantage and a disadvantage. Yes Japanese language is very interesting but at the same time it is also very complicated and hard to learn. Even the Japanese Language teachers themselves said that its hard and it really takes time. That even they as a teacher they also have to adjust to their approach to the students. Which brings us to the conclusion that teaching as a language teacher is not just a profession but also a lifestyle, where in it has its up and downs, the good and the bad, and its own advantages and disadvantages. The Opposing Characters Of Virgil Gillespie – Literature Essay Free Online Research Papers The Opposing Characters Of Virgil Gillespie Literature Essay John Ball’s In The Heat Of The Night introduces us to the two characters, Virgil Tibbs and Bill Gillespie. In the novel they are shown as two completely opposite characters whose personalities differ. The apparent theme in the novel is racism and how people would deal with it in the 1960s. Some terms and methods talked about in the book are quite different from those used today. Although there are the occasional people who one would disagree with, this book seems quite appropriate for today. In general, teenagers find themselves having to cope with racism and prejudice in our society. The novel, In The Heat Of The Night, besides dealing with the issue of prejudice, focuses on the major differences that exist between the two main characters. In the beginning of In The Heat Of The Night, we are introduced to Virgil Tibbs. Virgil is shown as a police officer that is wealthy, proper and an intelligent young black man. He is first brought into the story as a suspect for the murder of Enrico Mantoli, in the city of Wells. Soon after, he is introduced as a police officer from California, and slightly embarrasses Gillespie and Wood with their false accusations. Tibbs is a very well-educated man who is patient with others and rarely talks back to those addressing him in a rude manner. Just after Gillespie had been awfully rude and had a little temper tantrum, Tibbs politely replies â€Å"Good morning, Chief Gillespie† (45), right before he walks out of Gillespie’s office. Then when he is talking to Gillespie once more, he kindly says â€Å"After you sir† (25), as Gillespie walks through the doorway in front of him. Even though there is very little respect shown towards Tibbs despite all his help, he still continues to act in a civilized and well-behaved manor towards his peers. On the other hand, the character Bill Gillespie is quite different. He is an older, narrow-minded and racist chief of police from the city of Wells. Gillespie thinks that Tibbs is a nuisance and a distraction to the city. He has never met someone who is better then he is at his own job, especially a black man. â€Å"Nobody could tell him (Gillespie) that a coloured man could do anything he couldn’t do† (27). The problem is that not only is Tibbs more competent then Gillespie, but he is better educated. Also, his initial reaction to having Tibbs work on the case with their police force is very negative. He expresses these feelings quite often in the book. â€Å"Who in hell asked you to open your big black mouth† (45), Gillespie demanded. More over, racial comments and remarks such as this are found throughout the novel and are often expressed by the characters. In addition, there are numerous differences that clearly distinguish the main characters from each other. For example Gillespie is known as the uneducated, big-headed and racist character, â€Å"At that precise moment Bill did not want to see the Negro detective-as a matter of fact he did not want to see him at anytime† (74). On the other hand, Tibbs is the educated, forgiving and decent one. However, both these characters are achievers and are concerned about high status. Although tension exists between the two of them, they still have some respect for one another, as shown in the following, â€Å"Thank you, sir,† Tibbs said, â€Å"Is there anything else you wanted to ask me?† (104). Another example is when Gillespie thought, â€Å"And while he did not like to admit it to himself, he knew that Tibbs had something on the ball.† (76) In conclusion, the novel deals very effectively with the issue of prejudice. Moreover, the differences that exist between the two main characters are expressed very clearly and distinctively. Despite the fact that these two characters have ill feelings towards one another, they manage to gain respect for each other in the end.
